Dear Parents,

It is a pleasure to be your child’s sixth grade teacher for the 2017-2018 school year. I will be teaching English Language Arts, and my team teachers, Mrs. Courtney Snell and Mrs. Rachel Jenne', will be teaching Math, Science, and Social Studies.  I truly enjoy teaching, and I will do all that I can to make sixth grade a special year!

I would like to take a moment and tell you a little about myself.  I have been working for Desoto County Schools for almost ten years.  My husband, Richard Chandler, works for the Southaven Police Department as a Captain over Support Services. We have a ten-year-old son, Collin, who is our pride and joy. We are HUGE Ole Miss fans, and we enjoy attending the home games each football season. We also love our dogs, Jack and Daisy Mae!

As your child's teacher, I have some important responsibilities.  First, it is my responsibility to provide a safe learning environment. Second, it is my responsibility to take each student from where he or she is academically as far as I possibly can in one school year. Finally, it is my goal to teach students that learning can be challenging, but it can also be FUN!  I will do all that I can to make sure each responsibility is fulfilled throughout the school year.

In order for my class to be productive, we must all work together (teacher, student, and parent). There are many areas of importance in my classroom. The most important areas are class participation, homework, tests, reading projects, Accelerated Reader, and maintaining a reading and writer's notebook.  We will have many class activities.  Students will be required to work together as a class, in groups, as well as independently.

Students will be expected to keep up with notes (reading, writing, and English) each day. Students will be given rules and notes for basic understanding. It is my goal for each student to be able to understand all concepts by copying down rules or attaching the rules into their notebook.  Notebooks are an excellent way to study or review material.  Parents are also able to see how skills are taught and completed in the classroom.  I will teach students basic organizational skills, but each student will be responsible to make sure all notes are copied or attached in his or her notebook.

A weekly newsletter will be updated on my website each Monday afternoon.  A Remind text will be sent on Monday afternoons of the class newsletter.  The newsletter can also be found under the "Important Documents" tab on my website.  The newsletter will inform parents and students of weekly skills as well as day(s) for upcoming tests and important school announcements.

Many homework assignments will be for your child to read independently 20-30 minutes each night. Students will be required to take two A.R. tests each nine weeks, and these A.R. tests will be counted as reading test grades.  The A.R. tests will come from books that students read independently outside of class.  Students will be informed about written homework.  I allow two days to complete any written homework.  Written homework usually consists of close reading a passage the first night and answering standard focus questions the second night.

Homework is expected even when your child is absent and should be completed in a timely manner. Homework is very important as it is a tool for review.  Most homework assignments will be on current focus standards.  However, there may be homework assignments on previously taught skills (where I feel extra review is needed).  The ultimate goal is for students to master and retain the skills taught.

I know parents and students can be nervous about middle school.  I hope to ease your worries by loving my students as if they were my own.  Each student matters, and I truly look forward to building a relationship with you and your child.  Please share with me anything you know that will help me be a better teacher for your child. Throughout the year, I will challenge your child to reach his or her fullest potential.  I look forward to getting to know you and your child.

Sincerely,

Chrissy Chandler
