Plot Structure:

Plot - the organized pattern or sequence of events that make up a story.

Exposition - the information needed to understand a story. It includes the setting, characters, sets the scene, etc...

Rising Action - the series of events that lead to the climax

Climax - the turning point in the story. It is the defining moment of the plot.

Falling Action - the events that follow the climax; these events bring the story to a close.

Resolution - the conclusion/end of the story.



Development of theme

*Track the development of theme through the interaction of story elements (plot, setting, characters, conflict/resolution, POV/perspective, symbols)

Theme: Life lesson, meaning, moral, or message about life or human nature that is communicated by a literary work.

In other words…

Theme is what the story teaches readers.

 


 

 

A theme is not a word, it is a sentence.

 

You dont have to agree with the theme to identify it.

 

Examples:

Money cant buy happiness.

You can't judge a book by its cover.

Honesty is the best policy.

 


Remember:

1.Theme is what we can learn from a story.

2.Themes must be inferred.
3.Themes are about the bigger picture.

Steps to determining a theme: "Seed to Theme"

Step 1: Ask yourself "What is the text mostly about?" (this is your seed)

Step 2: Ask yourself "What does the author want me to know about _______? (plug in your answer from step 1 here)

Step 3: State your theme as a sentence. "I know the theme is _______ because the text says __________.

Making Inferences NOT Predictions:

 

Inference: It's not directly written or specifically stated; it's "reading between the lines"; filling in (your head) what isn't written on the page; it comes from you.

 

Prediction: Is part of inferring; you can check your accuracy as you read; you can find out if you were correct or incorrect.

 

Good readers: Infer to figure out what the author is saying; read between the lines; look for the clues in pictures or words to help them figure out what it's about; keep thinking if their inference is correct or needs to be revised.

Tactics to drawing an inference:

 

Step 1: Determine purpose for inferencing. Ask yourself what it is the author wants you to know. Can you make any predictions at this time?

 

Step 2: Find information from the text that will help you answer the question(s).

 

Step 3: Think about what you know about the information. Use your prior knowledge about the subject.

 

Step 4: Combine what the text says with what you know.
