My name is Gayle Whiteside, and as you know I am your child's language arts teacher. I am originally from Starkville, home of the Mississippi State Bulldogs, and I actually bleed maroon and white. I lived there for 29 years, so it is in my blood. Having said that, I graduated in May of 1994 with my Bachelor's of Elementary Education from Mississippi State. That same year, Aug. 1994, I started teaching third grade. The next school year I was teaching first graders as well as going back and taking night classes to get my masters. In the summer of 1997, I received my Master's Degree in Elementary Education from Mississippi State. I continued teaching first grade one more year after my masters, but then started teaching sixth grade in Aug. of 1998 and have been in this grade since, with the exception of when we moved here in 2002. In August of 2002, I taught fifth grade at Greenbrook Elementary and loved it, but my husband was the basketball coach at DCHS, and I wanted to be a part of that family. The next year was when I came to DCMS and started teaching sixth grade again. This is my 27th year of teaching. This is my 19th year in Desoto County Schools.
My husband, Shan, and I were married in July of 1997. We have 3 children together -- Lindsey is 21, Tyler is 19, and Leigh Allison is 16. Shan and I had 9 great years together, but seven of those years were marked by Shan's leukemia battle. On March 4, 2006, Shan passed away from complications of a unrelated bone marrow transplant. He was 34. I will always be thankful for our school, church, and community support that we received and still receive.
Lindsey enjoys playing basketball and being with her friends and family. Tyler enjoys watching sports and likes to play basketball in his free time, and Leigh Allison also likes to play basketball and likes to spend time with our family. Lindsey is a senior in college at Lipscomb University in Nashville and plays on the women's basketball team, Tyler is a freshman in college at Northwest MS CC and will pursue a degree in nursing, and Leigh Allison is in 10th grade at DCHS. I enjoy watching college football and basketball. When I have time for myself, I enjoy shopping, reading, and running.
I am excited to be your child's teacher this year, and if you ever need me just email. My email is email@example.com. I am looking forward to a great year in 6th grade.
